The AJIRA Digital Program is a Government initiative launched and driven by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology (MOICT). Its mandate is to empower millions of young Kenyans to access Digital work opportunities in the Gig and Freelancing economy through Training and Demand linkages. eMobilis, the principle MOICT partner, needed to operationalize 106 Constituency Innovation Hubs established across Kenya so Kenyan youth could access connectivity, computer equipment, resources, training, mentorship and support.
As one of the leading financial institutions in Kenya, SBM bank has a long history of enabling business development for SMEs. Post COVID 19, unsecured financing continues to be a critical lifeline for many yet at the same time historical data has been rendered less effective as a vetting tool for financial institutions. SBM bank were looking for alternative data points that would guide them in their decisions around disbursement of unsecured loans to SMEs.
We designed training content for Business Continuity Planning for SMEs in the SBM ecosystem. Feedback from the SMEs in the cohorts so far has been the ability to review their business models and create contingency plans in various strategic business areas in their operation. For some, it has also helped the businesses identify opportunities presented by the current landscape and possible new avenues to leverage using their existing business infrastructure and resources.
In Africa, high informality, poor social protection schemes and a growing youth population has led to perpetual joblessness in the region at a 77% rate. The rate of technological advancements continues to define how we work, but on the continent, barriers like insufficient levels of skill, productivity and competitiveness prevail. Educated youth end up seeking refuge in the informal economy with approximately one-third with tertiary education venturing into the informal sector.
